The Wet Test | Salt Water Sandals
Since 1944

Yes, they go in water.

The leather sandal that's supposed to get wet. Here's why and how.

From Every Box We Ship

"Salt Water Sandals Love Water! We suggest that the sandals be dampened with water, then be worn while they are wet. This will conform the leather to your foot."
The card inside every Salt Water box since day one

The leather is crafted with a protective outer film that makes it naturally water-resistant. When the leather gets wet while you're wearing the sandals, it softens and molds to the exact shape of your foot. The outside looks the same. But the inside becomes yours.

. . .

The Wet Test: Three Steps

1
Put Them On
Buckle or slide them on like normal. The fit should be snug. Sandals should not be oversized when fitted.
2
Get Them Wet
Walk into a pool, the ocean, through a sprinkler, or under a hose. Get them fully wet while on your feet.
3
Wear and Air Dry
Keep wearing them while wet. The leather molds to your foot. Take them off and let them air dry naturally. Never use heat.

What Happens to the Leather

The outer film keeps the sandal looking the same on the outside. The inside layer softens with moisture and shapes itself around the curves of your foot, the width of your toes, and the arch of your step. As the sandals air dry, the leather sets into that new shape. Your Salt Waters are now uniquely yours.

This is why so many customers say their Salt Waters are the most comfortable shoes they own. They fit like no other shoe can because they've been molded by the person wearing them.

Fitting Your Salt Waters

A
Loosen the Straps
Place your thumbs in the straps and pull outward. This widens them so your foot slides in comfortably. The leather will continue to loosen with wear.
B
Shape the Sandal
Hold the sandal in the palm of your hand and squeeze. This flexes and softens the leather before you put it on. Think of it as warming up the leather before it gets to know your foot.
Snug is right. The leather stretches and molds as you wear them. A snug fit on day one means a perfect fit by day seven.
Feeling a hot spot? Dampen the sandals with water and keep wearing them wet. The leather will conform to your foot and the pressure point disappears.
Always air dry. Never use a dryer or direct heat. The leather needs to set slowly to hold its shape.
They only get better. The more you wear them, the more comfortable they become. These are sandals that improve with age.

Common Questions

Will the color change when wet?
No. The protective outer film keeps the color intact. The sandal looks the same wet as it does dry. Let them air dry and they're good as new.
How long to air dry?
A few hours to overnight depending on humidity. Set them in a ventilated area at room temperature.
Can kids' sizes get wet too?
Absolutely. The kids' sandals use the same water-safe leather. These sandals were originally designed for children, so getting them wet is exactly what they were built for.
Do I have to get them wet to break them in?
You don't have to, but it's the fastest way. The leather will conform through regular dry wear too. Water just speeds up the molding process.
What if they feel tight at first?
That's normal. The leather stretches and molds to your foot, especially after the wet test. Only size up if the sandal doesn't fit lengthwise. A snug fit on day one means a perfect fit within a week.
